Tips in Selecting Green Coffee Bean

Coffee experts can tell the quality of coffee by merely looking at the green coffee bean. The appearance of the green coffee bean tells a tale about its quality. As a must, coffee sellers should grade the green coffee bean before selling it. It means that they have to be sorted according to their physical appearance, the area from where they grow, the grower they came from, and the drying process undergone.

Good quality beans observe similarity of characteristics. They are similarly shaped and sized and the color of each bean is evidently of the same shade. It is important for the coffee bean sellers to observe such characteristics because it will determine the evenness of the roasting process.

Green beans from different growers should not be mixed together. They have to be strictly treated separately in every stage to maintain the high quality of coffee.

The drying process of green beans should be observed well. This is because the quality of a truly delicious coffee starts early during the drying process.

These beans should be processed immediately upon harvesting. This is to avoid fermentation of the beans. Harvested coffee beans tend to ferment immediately after the picking. One can tell by the smell if the bean already started fermenting. Avoid coffee beans that smell fermented and smoked.

Beans that dried naturally are covered in brown-silver skin. This is called a fox bean. If the silver skin can be removed by rubbing the bean on a black sorting mat, such turn in color is not considered a defect.

People will find it hard to go wrong when selecting a good quality green coffee bean. Just observe the appearance and the smell of the bean and it will tell a lot about their qualities. If you are not sure about what quality to observe, ask the experts.

Last week for roasted green chiles and jalapenos from San Simon Chile Company. Jane Wyatt will bring a trailer load of hot peppers and her roaster for the last time this season. Stock up on a year’s supply as the chiles freeze well. Try Jane’s Senor Salsa or jalapeno jelly or dried red chile pods.
